BushFire Fear Shuts Schools in Australia

A lack of rain and a predicted change in wind has made conditions the most dangerous in recent weeks.More than 3,000 firefighters are still fighting major blazes following the 7 February firestorm that killed 210 people and left thousands homeless.Temperatures are predicted to rise towards 40C , accompanied by high winds and low humidity.


More than 200 schools have been closed in south-eastern Australia as the government warned of an intensified fire risk ahead of the weekend.The state of Victoria was put on a high fire alert and dozens of fires continue to burn there."We have an extremely dry fuel load, and therefore extreme fire danger," Victoria's state emergency services commissioner Bruce Esplin told reporters.

People in areas near the fires needed to decide early whether to evacuate their homes, or stay and defend their properties, adding it was too late to leave once the flames were in sight.
Many of those killed 20 days ago died in their cars as they attempted to outrun the fires.The country's biggest-ever arson investigation is continuing into the causes of some of the fires.

Exo Planet Super Neptune Discovered

Astronomers at the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics have discovered a planet somewhat larger and more massive than Neptune orbiting a star 120 light-years from Earth. While Neptune has a diameter 3.8 times that of Earth and a mass 17 times Earth's, the new world is 4.7 times the size of Earth and has 25 Earth masses.

Transit detections are particularly useful because the amount of dimming tells the astronomers how big the planet must be. By combining transit data with measurements of the star's "wobble" made by large telescopes like Keck, astronomers can determine the mass of the planet.A number of Neptune-like planets have been found recently by radial velocity searches, but HAT-P-11b is only the second Neptune-like planet found to transit its star, thus permitting the precise determination of its mass and radius.

The newfound world orbits very close to its star, revolving once every 4.88 days. As a result, it is baked to a temperature of around 1100 degrees F. The star itself is about three-fourths the size of our Sun and somewhat cooler.


HAT-P-11 is in the constellation Cygnus, which puts in it the field of view of NASA's upcoming Kepler spacecraft. Kepler will search for extrasolar planets using the same transit technique pioneered by ground-based telescopes. This mission potentially could detect the first Earth-like world orbiting a distant star. "In addition, however, we expect Kepler to measure the detailed properties of HAT-P-11 with the extraordinary precision possible only from space.

Forest Fire in Nilgiri Biosphere Area

Nilgiri Biosphere Area occurs at the Tri Junction spot of Kerala-Tamilnadu-Karnataka, the south Indian states. Forest fires of varying intensity have occurred in the protected areas of Nilgiri biosphere Reserve over the past 8 days. The fires have caused some damage in wild life sanctuaries of Bandipur, Nagarhole National Park in karnataka, Wayanad Sanctuary in Kerala and Mudhumalai Sanctuary in Tamilnadu during the second week of February.

The Forest ministers of south-Indian states held a conference to discuss the ways to preserve the Biosphere area. In the meeting it was decided that the three south Indian states must act together in sorting out this issue in a smooth manner. Almost all forest fires are caused by humans as they enter the protected areas illegally. Fire Maps are supplied as a part of the Fire information for Resource Management System in order to enable managers of protected areas to react to fires instantly. According to reports of 2006, the National Forest commission pointed out that Evergreen forests are subjected to fire on large scale and the frequency of forest fires are increasing rapidly.

Forest fires often linked to excessive livestock grazing and careless human behavior destroy biodiversity. Fragmentation of wild life habitats arising from loss of forest connectivity is a serious limiting factor for wild life and this type of fragmentation are mostly caused by Big Fires in the forest reserve areas. Also forest fires cause decline in species diversity, seedling and sapling density and tree densities. This could have a major impact on our ecosystem and we must look forward to protect forests on a long term basis for a healthy environment all round thee world.

A wave is a disturbance that propagates through space and time, usually with transference of energy. While a mechanical wave exists in a medium, waves of electromagnetic radiation travel through vacuum, that is, without a medium. Perhaps the one relation that has survived the trials and tribulations of time and has still remained unconditional is friendship. To experience what is friendship, one must have true friends, who are indeed rare treasure.


Psychologically speaking, friendship may be defined as "a dynamic, mutual relationship between two individuals. As children become friends, they negotiate boundaries within which both partners function". This helps them to function like healthy individuals in life as they learn to draw a line as and when needed in a relation. This greatly helps in the emotional development of an individual. However, any relation needs constant nurturing and development from all the people that are involved in one. Friendship cannot survive if one person makes all the effort to sustain it without any mutual recognition from others.

The scientists demonstrate the ability to decode a person’s preference for one of two drinks with 80 per cent accuracy by measuring the intensity of near infrared light absorbed in brain tissue.

This new technique that uses infrared light brain imaging to decode preference with the goal of ultimately opening the world of choice to children who can’t speak or move.

“This is the first system that decodes preference naturally from spontaneous thoughts,”
After teaching the computer to recognize the unique pattern of brain activity associated with preference for each subject, the researchers accurately predicted which drink the participants liked best 80 per cent of the time.

Most brain-computer interfaces designed to read thoughts require training.
Wearing a headband fitted with fibre-optics that emit light into the pre-frontal cortex of the brain, they were shown two drinks on a computer monitor, one after the other, and asked to make a mental decision about which they liked more. “When your brain is active, the oxygen in your blood increases and depending on the concentration, it absorbs more or less light.”

Microsoft to cut 5000 jobs!!!

Microsoft Corp. today said it will cut 5,000 jobs amid falling profits. About 1,400 positions were eliminated today.The company said it plans to cut jobs in research and development, marketing, sales, finance, legal, human resources and IT over the next 18 months. The first 1,400 jobs will be cut on Thursday.Microsoft projected that the job cuts will trim its annual operating expense run rate by $1.5 billion and reduce its fiscal 2009 capital expenditures by $700 million.

The layoffs are being implemented due to IT spending that fell lower than the company's expectations for the quarter. Microsoft said in a statement that it "acted quickly" to reduce its costs.Microsoft warned that its revenue and earnings for the second half of the year relative to the previous year will be "almost certainly" lower.

The company said it can't provide quantitative revenue and earnings-per-share guidance for the rest of the year due to "the volatility of market conditions."


Software client revenue fell 8 percent, as PC sales slumped and buyers turned to low-cost netbooks, the company said. Annual software license fees pushed server and software tool revenue up 15 percent, while entertainment and devices revenue grew 3 percent on the back of holiday demand for the Xbox game console.
